Home Gym Equipment for HYROX Training: What You Need for All 8 Stations

A tiered home gym list for HYROX: the minimum kit to train every station (sandbag, kettlebells, medicine ball, tape), what to add next (sled, rower, SkiErg), space requirements, Season 26/27 race weights to buy to, and what you can skip.

Published

You can train for HYROX at home with surprisingly little, because the race is mostly running plus four loaded movements that need cheap kit. The expensive machines (SkiErg, rower, sled) cover three stations and can be substituted or borrowed from a gym once a week. This guide works through the eight stations, lists the minimum kit, then the upgrades in the order they pay off. Buy to your division's race weights; they are listed below and unchanged for Season 26/27.

Independent guide; not affiliated with HYROX, DEKA or Spartan.

Full tables for Doubles and Relay are in the station weights tool.

Tier 1: the minimum (covers 5 of 8 stations plus running)

  • Running shoes and somewhere to run 1 km repeats. Running is half the race; this is the most important item. See best shoes for HYROX.
  • Two kettlebells at race weight. Farmers carry, plus a loaded alternative for sled work (heavy carries, swings, goblet squats). Competition-style handles are closest to event kit.
  • Sandbag at race weight. A tube-style bag that sits across the shoulders. The sandbag guide compares styles.
  • Medicine ball at race weight and a wall. Mark your target at 2.70 m or 3.00 m with tape. Soft, 35 cm diameter balls match event kit; see wall balls and medicine balls.
  • A tape measure and floor tape. Mark 12.5 m, 20 m and 25 m. Burpee broad jumps need only 20 m of floor and strict lines.
  • Chalk for carry and rope practice.

With this you can train the farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls and burpee broad jumps exactly as raced, and the runs. Cost is modest and the whole set fits in a corner.

Tier 2: the sled (covers stations 2 and 3)

A sled is the first big purchase worth making, because the two sled stations have the widest time spread in the race and are the hardest to substitute.

  • Sled with high uprights for pushing and a rope anchor for pulling. Loadable to at least 200 kg including the sled if anyone in the household races Men Pro.
  • Plates: bumper or iron, 100 to 150 kg depending on division.
  • Rope: 10 to 12 m, 30 to 38 mm thick, for the pull.
  • Surface: 15 m of grass, artificial turf or a quiet car park. Concrete chews skids; buy replaceable skids or use a turf strip. Floor friction, not nominal weight, decides how hard the sled feels, so test against a gym sled before a race.

The sleds for home training guide compares options and surfaces. Station details are in the sled push and sled pull guides.

Tier 3: the ergs (stations 1 and 5)

  • Rower. A Concept2 RowErg is the event machine and holds its value. Air rowers with a distance countdown are acceptable substitutes. See rowers for HYROX training.
  • SkiErg. A Concept2 SkiErg wall- or floor-mounted; needs about 2.3 m of ceiling. Lower priority than the rower because the SkiErg time spread is the smallest in the race. See the SkiErg buying guide.

If you can only afford one, buy the rower and do SkiErg work at a gym once a week. Gyms list rower and SkiErg counts in the gym directory; a drop-in day a week covers the two machines for less than buying both.

Space and floor

  • Minimum footprint for Tier 1: 3 m x 3 m plus a wall for wall balls.
  • Burpee broad jumps: 20 m straight line, indoors or out.
  • Sled: 15 m lane outdoors.
  • Rower: 2.5 m x 1.2 m; SkiErg: 1.3 m x 0.6 m floor, 2.3 m height.
  • Rubber tiles under the kettlebell and sandbag area protect a garage floor and your neighbours' patience.

What you can skip

  • A barbell and rack. Useful for general strength, not required for any station.
  • A weighted vest. Adds nothing the sandbag does not.
  • Lifting straps or hooks. Not usable in the race.
  • A treadmill, unless weather makes outdoor 1 km repeats impossible for months.

A sample week on Tier 1 kit

  1. Run intervals: 6 x 1 km at race pace with 90 s rest.
  2. Station circuit: 4 rounds of 200 m carry, 50 m lunges, 25 wall balls, 20 m burpee broad jumps, with 400 m runs between.
  3. Easy run 40 to 60 minutes.
  4. Strength: goblet squats, split squats, kettlebell swings, dead hangs.
  5. Simulation (every two to three weeks): the full station circuit with 1 km runs, substituting heavy carries for the sleds, or do it at a gym with a sled track.

Find a race to aim at in the events calendar and a gym with the machines you lack in the gym directory.
